Sermon Title: Are You Able
Worship service date: April 14, 2019
Interim Pastor Thomas Hiltsley
Primary Bible verses:
Matthew 20:17-23, 21:6-11
John 19:16-18
Galatians 3:20
Key sermon points:
There is a double irony in the request of James and John
- Jesus was crucified between two thieves
- Closeness to Jesus means sharing His cup and His baptism
Cup = Rejection
Baptism = Cross
- “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me.” Matthew 16:24.
- “Jesus began to teach them that the Son of Man MUST suffer many thins and be rejected.” Mark 8:31.
- The imperatives of suffering, rejection and death sum up the Cross of Jesus
- They apply no less to the disciple than to Jesus
The Cup and the Baptism are not the price of special privilege, they are the price of following Jesus at all
Galatians 3:20 states the response of the true disciple of every age
